First World War Letters of H.J.C Peirs Field Research

Student-faculty research and experiential learning are highlights of a Gettysburg College education. The First World War Letters of H.J.C. Peirs is a multi-year, collaborative digital history project involving students, faculty, administrators, and alumni. To build upon our success, we are raising money for our team – one faculty member, one administrator, and up to three students to conduct field research in northern France and Belgium during the centennial of the First World War.

Additionally, we will travel the path of H.J.C. Peirs during the defense of the French town of Le Verguier in March 1918. We want to connect our students in the field with students in the classroom in real time with a live video call, and share with them the passion and thrill of doing history. Please help us go beyond primary sources and bring the battlefield to the classroom 100 years to the day that Peirs and his men struggled to defend the town of Le Verguier.
